Hello all,

I tried researching but I couldn't find much on the internet and just need some clarification. I'm not the best with computer components and would like to get some advice.

My old graphics card broke around 2-3 weeks ago, it was a Sapphire ATI 6850. So I bought the MSI R9 270 to replace it. It arrived today and I've had nothing but trouble.

When turning on my computer I have no keyboard or mouse turning on as well as my monitor saying "No signal" so I can't see what the problem is. I ran a temporary card to check and that works fine.

Any idea what the problem is? I would really appreciate some advice as I'm losing it here!

My computer specs:
CPU: Intel Core i5 2500 3.3GHz
Motherboard: MSI P67A-GD53
RAM: G-Skill 8GB DDR3 1600Mhz

Thanks

I would first start with the PCIe Power connectors on the back of the Video card. Then try a different PCIe slot on the motherboard. Then try hooking both cards up so you can see and then flashing new firmware on the Card and for your Motherboard.

Are you sure your PSU is powerful enough to support it? Is everything plugged in?

Corsair 600W should be enough right? I'm not running a crazy amount of fans or drives.

Yeah it should be enough. As the other guy/girl said, try checking different PCIe adapters and make sure everything is firmly plugged in. Also, does your card have both a(n) 8pin and 6 pin next to each other? I ask this because my r9 290 has both an 8pin and 6pin requirement and I thought that it didnt work when only the 6pin wasnt in so I upgraded my PSU like an idiot and it would of worked fine with the 600 lol.

The power supply was good enough to power the old HD6850 so it stands to reason it's enough to handle the new R9-270... unless of course, it was a failing power supply that broke your HD6850 in the first place.

I am going to guess it's your PSU.

Is there any way to test my PSU?

My old Corsair CX600w ran a 7850 just fine.

Also, if your test card works fine, then it most likely isnt your PSU.

One of my friends said that the R9 270 doesn't work on the 1155 socket? Is this true or?

You could get a power supply tester like this one.

I don't see how that would be possible. Maybe your friend got a board with a faulty PCIe slot otherwise it shouldn't matter.

When I turn on my computer with the R9 270 installed, The fans on the card start up, then stop then restart again. Not sure if thats normal as I've never started my PC with the case off. Maybe that might help narrow down the problem

make sure your card is plugged into the motherboard firmly (if it's hanging loosely then it would make sense why the fans start but no display shows)

I did this twice, If its not compatibility issues with the motherboard then could it be BIOS?

Is your ram firmly plugged in? I had this same exact issue when one of my ram sticks wasn't fully plugged in..

I checked everything over, I moved my hard drives around to fit the card in my case. I made sure all cables were plugged in several times, thing is if I use my test card (doesn't need 6pin power just mobo) everything works fine.

It could be a faulty card. They exist. That's all I can think of. If it isn't time critical that you have the card right now you can get a replacement.

If you can, test the new card in another system. If it works in that system, the problem is the power supply.

I just tried this. I'm not sure what motherboard the other machine is running all I do know is that its AMD. The card started without any stop/start fans and was recognized in device manager so seems to be working fine so its not a faulty card.

So you 100% think its the power supply not giving enough power or maybe even broke and thats why I'm getting the start/stop fans?

I believe my PSU is just in warranty (almost at the end of the 3 years). Do you think I need more power? If the PSU is capable i'll get a replacement

It the new card works in another computer system, then I'm about 95% positive the problem lies with the power supply. If it's under warranty, get it replaced. Otherwise, look for a new one from Antec, Corsair (non-CX), Seasonic, XFX, PC Power and Cooling or FSP (fortran source) in the 500-600 watt range.

I'm going to give MSI and Corsair a phone on monday, either way I think I'm going to get a replacement for my PSU. I'll update the thread once I've heard from them. Thanks for the help

Could the problem be with the BIOS?

I just checked the download website to update my BIOS and found that I'm running a version from 2010/2011 and because the card is new its probably not picking it up. But due to the card being in the PCI-E slot its not booting correctly.

Thoughts?

Unless the updated BIOS specifically states an update for newer graphic cards, the issue is not the system BIOS.
