I attached my 500 GB external hard drive to my laptop, which had an assigned letter drive of E. I also attached a new 1 TB external hard drive to the laptop, for copying to it data from the drive E. Unfortunately, instantly, the new 1 TB drive took the letter drive E and the original drive E (500 GB) with all my data lost its letter drive. As a result, it is not recognized by the computer and all my data are virtually lost. Can somebody knowledgeable help me assign a letter drive to this disk drive, which is shown as "unallocated"? Thank you.

Hi

So go to start => control panel => system and security => administrative tools (you can go straight here from small/large icons view) => computer management. It'll open up a new window. On the left hand side navigate to "disk management" and find your 500gb drive. right click on the tiny hard drive icon with no drive letter next to it under the "volume" column and go to "change drive letter and paths..." click change (making sure its the correct drive!) and it'll give you a list of drive letters not in use.

Hi Twig,

Thanks a lot for your help. Unfortunately, this did not work. As I described in my first post, my healthy 500 GB drive lost its drive letter. It now shows up in the Disk Management without a letter drive, indicated as "Unalloocated", has a black top banner, unlike the blue top banner for the healthy ones in Disk Management. I tried to do according to your instructions and when I right clicked on the tiny hard drive icon with no drive letter next to it under the "volume" column, the options do not include "change drive letter and paths..." but what I get include "Convert to Dynamic Disk", "Convert to GTP Disk", "Offline", "Properties", "Help". I can send a screenshot. Could you please help me out of this mess? I have valuable data of approximately 250 GB, which are like my lifeline. Thank you.
