How old is your PC?
Honestly, you were probably best to not upgrade. Windows 8 and WIndows 8.1 are less user friendly, have worse program compatibility, worse drivers, eat up more resources, and pretty much just makes problems in lots of places Windows 7 didn't. Chances are that the drivers AMD made for that old graphics card for Windows 8.1 are not going to work very well and cause problems. You would be better to buy a new graphics card or downgrade to Windows 7.

Older PCs will have a difficult time running Windows 8.1. Best course of action for now is to upgrade to an NVIDIA graphics card (AMD drivers have issues with Windows 8.1 from what I heard) and upgrade the RAM and possibly the CPU. If you cannot afford to upgrade all that, then you should reinstall Windows 7. If you have a Windows 7 retail or recovery disk, then you can reinstall Windows 7 using that.

Windows 8 and 8.1 are virtually the same thing. Wouldn't help or change anything.
If you had Windows 7 previously you can probably still use your old license on that same computer and reinstall it, otherwise you will probably need to buy a new copy of Windows 7. Unfortunately you most likely can't get any return for the Windows 8.1 once the serial key was used, so that investment is gone.

Its mostly just the old cards that seem to have the problems with Windows 8/8.1. Newer cards like GCN stuff doesn't seem to have any issue. 6000 and 5000 cards seem to be a bit worse but not terrible, and 4000 cards and back seem to be pretty awful for it. Its kind of a sad state of things but honestly that older hardware is probably ready to be retired anyways.

Possibly. If you ahve the install disk and the serial key. WIthout the serial key its useless. Though the recover disks should work either way.

Boot from the first recovery disk, then it will start an installation. Follow it through putting the next disk in then the next till the end.

Yes the serial key on the bottom of the laptop, if it is for Windows 7 can probably activate Windows 7 again on that laptop. That is the Windows 7 key.
