one person has a dying HDD in a laptop so I'm looking for a soliton...

taking in to accaunt that she already bought a replacement laptop, and that old laptop might just be used for browsing the internet, I'm thinking of either a HDD replacement or a bootable OS.

in case I go with a bootable OS, I want to know if its even an option.

I forgot to ask what OS was there. It should be either W7 or W XP. (and yes I know that W8 can be bootable).

So is it possible to use a bootable flash Windows 7 and windows XP.

Does it mean that other programs can be used with it (skype, media players, something else) or is it limited just by OS and internet?

thanks

Well Linux distros can be readily "live" booted from cdroms or USB sticks and will browse the web and stuff
but they do have a bit of a learning curve. And booting from cd or an external drive is much slower

i guess I should've said first that I'm only considering windows... I think everyone know that linux is bootable, but thats the problem, no one is gonna want to learn an entierly new OS...
