Hi all!

I just got a Surfboard 6141 hooked up. It replaced a SB5121. Everything is all good, I can connect to the Internet if I connect my laptop to the modem via Ethernet. However, when I plug the 6141 into the Broadband port of my Dlink DIR-655 router, it doesn't cooperate. When I connect to the config page of the 655 and go to Status, the Network Status just shows "Establishing". Any devices connected to the 655 via Ethernet can not access the Internet. I am using a working cable, I have tried a factory reset of the 655, my firmware is up to date, etc etc.

I did get this process to work by using a Cisco E1000 - everybody plays nice when they are connected. It is just the 655 that is stumped. I would like to utitize the 1000mbps ports of the 655 and I would like to avoid replacing my router.

To me, this is just a basic dhcp process between the 6141 and the 655. Can anyone offer any thoughts as to why this doesn't work?
TIA!
John

Since this is just a modem there is no dhcp between the modem and the dlink. You would get the IP address directly from the ISP.....it maybe via dhcp but the modem is not providing it.

The most common issue is that cable companies only allow you to have a single mac address/ip address on a cable connection. The modem tend to lock the first one it see and the only way to clear it is to power cycle the modem. It may have your PC mac address set.

You could try the mac cloning option in some routers but I would try the more standard solution of with the router connected to the modem turn the power off to both. Turn on the modem and allow it to fully come up. Then turn on your router. It should at this point lock the mac of the router and provide you a ip address.

Hi Bill,
Thanks for the lightning fast reply!

I don't get why one router works and the other does not - do you have any thoughts on this? I definitely tried a reboot of the 6141 to get it to talk to the 655 before doing a factory reset on it and swapping to the other router. However, it was about a week ago since I worked on this, so maybe I didn't give the 6141 time enough to boot fully.
Let me know what you think, after that, I will try a full reboot of the 6141 before connecting the 655.
