I am seeing them on Ebay for under $150, some are for $120. The thing that scares me is that they are most likely retired miners, so 2 will cost $300, plus the replacement fans. Also, there is no warranty. So the total is nearly $425, which is pretty good. Should I pull the trigger, or buy new?

HD 7950 is R9 280, great card but i would still go for new one. Maybe wait and see what GTX970 can do. It should be at your reach.

120 sounds like a reasonable price for a used 7950, if it's not been molested or anything. But I wouldn't go any higher than that, certainly not for a used card.

Although personally I wouldn't buy a graphics card that is 2 years old, and used as well; maybe I only like that "new card smell".

Buying used works well when you get the recipe or original purchase, most of the time you get the box as well. Warranty is my #1 factor when buying used parts, most of the items are still in warranty if you look for specific brands.
