Slow network with switch

Ok folks, I have a strange one, at least to me. I have noticed that over the past few weeks, web browsing had become slow on just my pc. We have a myriad of devices connected to the network both wired and wireless and this one pc is the only one having trouble.

It all came to a head the other day when I could not send an email with a 50mb attachment out. Outlook failed complaining about the smtp server. I tried using another email client on a totally different account and that encountered the same problem. Also, at about the same time, my wife tried to access a large share on my pc. It took literally 5 minutes for her to access the share.

Since there the a few switches (2) between my pc and the router, I was able to run a direct connection between the pc and the router. All problems solved - ah ha, bad switch. So, I tried putting a brand new switch next to the pc, inserted the working direct cable into it and a new short cable between the switch and pc. Problems returned. Take switch out - all good. Note, nothing else besides this one pc on the switch.

So, pulled all connections except cable modem and wire to this pc/switch combo out of router to eliminate everything except wifi on network. Still, with switch in I have problems, without all is good.
Tried two other switches and same results - good without, bad with.

This is a widows 7 machine, the router is an ASUS WL-500GU running Tomato. I've tried netgear and trendnet switches. I've deleted the NIC from Windows, went through adding the hardware back using the latest drivers from Realtek PCIe Family.

I am literally at wits end as to why a switch would cause this one machine to perform like this. Again, direct connect to router works fine,,,,,put a switch in-line and it all goes to heck....

Any creative thinkers for this problem?

Thanks,
Tom

I would do a couple things. First test file sharing strictly over the switch whithout it being connected to the router. This will identify if it is a network problem or the router. Second I might purchase a Cross Over cable to connect your Switch to your Router to rule out if it is an autoswitching problem.

Try this and let me know how it goes.

CableModem<------->ASUSWL520<------------>PC Works fine
CableModem<-------->ASUSWL520<------>Switch<------>PC Slooooooooow (Nothing else on switch)

If I disconnect all wired connections on ASUSWL520, same results. I had same thought since we have a couple DVRs on network. But same results with or without other network connections. This just in though.... ESFileExplorer on android phone can access the shares quickly in either of the above configs. Pointing towards possible a Windows problem.

I've tried them all at one point when I disconnected the entire network from the router. No difference on any of them.

Good thought. Will try later tonight or in the morning.

Just another data point though. Remembered I had a dual boot win7 machine that had Linux Mint on it. Booted into Mint and the network share worked fine. So Android devices and Linux have not problems but Win7 and Win8.1 wifi/wired have problems.

The Linux test was done configed like:

Linux<--->Switch1<---->Switch2<---->AsusWl520<--->switch3<------> PC with Share
Switch 1 and 2 have a few other devices hung off them while switch 3 has only the 1 PC on it

That sounds like a NetBIOS problem. I would double check your network adaptor on your computer to make sure it is using TCP/IP.

Go to the properties of the TCP/IP service and look under the WINS tab and make sure it does not have "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP" select.

Thought you might be onto something as it was enabled. Unfortunately, no difference with it disabled. Same results. I also made sure to disable/enable adapter between trys to make sure the setting took. Does not affect end result with it disabled or enabled (NetBIOS)

Tested this with two different switches. Same problem as before - sloooooow access to PC with issue. Fast access to other pc from bad pc.

Need to build crossover cable today.

Ok, I finally solved the problem - sort of.

After thinking about it, I decided to reload the tcp ip stack via "netshell winsock reset catalog" - then rebooted. Unfortunately this again did not solve the problem.

I had, during this issue, went to Realtek and downloaded the proper drivers for the NIC. I got to thinking about maybe the settings for the driver needed to be tweaked so I started searching for recommended settings. Came across someone elsewhere that had similar problems accessing an sql database. His eventual solution was to disable all options except Flow Control. So I figured, why not? I went and disabled everything that I could except for Flow Control (I wrote down all previous settings prior to the change). Viola! No more issues! Problem solved!

Now, the question remains though, was it just one setting or multiple settings that were causing the issue? As soon as I get a chance, I'll trying enabling them one at a time and see when the problem returns, but at this point I'm back in business again. Accessing shares on this PC and also internet browsing are back to normal speeds.

Thanks to all for their suggestions and thoughts.
