How do you tell the H Drive to back up things? Mine came with no instructions!

I have a Bytech 2.5 Sata External Hard Drive which is not backing up anything. A "friend" hooked it up for me and said it would automatically back up everything periodically, but I just checked the H Drive and it hasn't backed up anything since it was plugged in. It cost me $70 and the "friend" is not answering emails. Anybody have any ideas? I have a laptop with Windows 8.1 (which I hate, thanks for asking).

It won't back things up by itself unless there's a utility installed on the PC to do that. When you go into that drive do you see any program setup files that came with it, or was there a disk that came with it? If so run that installer.
