I have my regular machine, an old HP running Win 7/64, that I've been using for years and a friend recently gave me a Dell Precision 490 server that I want to set up as a Linux platform so I can teach myself how to use it.

I know I can buy a DVI KVM switch for about $100 or I can run a software VNC.

I know that one advantage of the hardware switch is that I can use it to load the OS.

The main advantage I see with software is the price --- "free" is almost within my budget!

Due to space limitations, I'm restricted to a single monitor, mouse & kbd.

May I have your thoughts/suggestions?

Once you load the OS onto your server, you can SSH into it to manage it. If you load GUI onto the server, there are many ways to get either remote desktop, or remote login from within Windows (VNC, RDP, Chrome remote desktop).

If both systems are in the same area, almost all monitors have dual inputs. You can keep a wireless or wired keyboard/mouse hooked up to both systems (just keep it on top of the case out of the way when not used) and just switch inputs on the monitor.
