Monitor going to sleep, but not really

About a week ago, my computer monitor started to randomly go to sleep after about a minute or two of in activeness; however, it is not actually going to sleep. The pixels are just going black. You can tell that the monitor pixels aren't exactly resting, they are being used, but for black pixels. I have also configured the control panel so it does not go to sleep ever. Something is wrong.

Right now I am using a HP Pavilion g7, with a magnavox HDTV has a dual monitor display thing.
I have experimented around to see if the dual monitor was the problem, by unplugging it and waiting, but the problem still occurs.

Thanks for any help.

I think it may have been the default screen saver on some systems.

Since CFL lights do not tend to like lots of on/off cycles(a better ballast setup can reduce this to a point that it is not an issue anyway), it may have been better for some flat screens. Older CRTs that took longer to warm up also worked better with blank then actual screen sleep. LED based back lights are immune to any issues from constant on and off.
