Hi all,

Just got a new Samsung Evo SSD. I moved some SATA connections, removed one of my DVD drives, connected the SSD, and when I started the PC I'm getting no signal to the monitor. The fans are going, and everything seems ok except I cannot see anything on the monitor.

Here's what I have:
1 TB WD Black HD
256 GB Samsung Evo SSD
i5 3570
Asrock Z77 extreme 4
Nvidia GTX 670

I've tried using both the motherboard video card and the nvidia. I've moved the SATA connections and checked to make sure everything is connected. I'm losing my mind trying to figure this out. Please help!

Solution
Try the onboard video with the NVidia card completely removed from the motherboard. If it works then, try reseating and locking the GPU card back into place and try it again.

Make sure all the RAM modules are firmly seated and none of them got damaged or unseated when you were moving things around.

Double check the 24 and 4 or 8 pin motherboard power connectors. It's very easy for those to be bumped loose slightly which may result in power to one part of the board only.

Yup, tried those things. Tried with hdmi to my tv as well. I've tried to press F2 to get to the bios screen. No go with any of it. I'm really hoping I didn't fry my mobo somehow.

Well, I unhooked the original HD again to try to install windows on the SSD, and now I'm back in the original position. I'm at wit's end here. No idea what to do.

So, when it first started working again, was the SSD connected? It sounds to me like there is a problem with the SSD, the hard drive controller or maybe you need a BIOS update to support an SSD in your system. Maybe a bad SATA cable that has a break in one of the wires inside the insulation and is being disturbed when moved. Maybe try a different SATA cable. Perhaps it has to do with storage support in the BIOS. Try putting the HD back in and if you can get into the BIOS try updating to the most recent version if your version is older than version 2.9. It seems like there a quite a few controller support related BIOS update revisions listed. Here is the BIOS image page which also has links to how to update:

Thanks, I am thinking it is likely to be the SATA cables. I have one that is missing the clip, and they are somewhat loose as is. I just ordered a pack to check it out. When it has booted up, it's booted to the screen that asks if I want to go to the BIOS setup. I'm thinking that is due to switching which SATA ports I was using. I'll check back in here when I get the new cables.

Edit to answer your question: I have tried with and without the SSD connected. I am not sure there's been any rhyme or reason to the times it has started completely, which is why I'm guessing it's an error with the cables.

Update: I was able to get the system started again. I changed the computer to boot from my SSD, and formatted my HDD. I restarted the computer, and it worked fine. This was all with my video card not plugged in. I then shut down the computer, inserted my videocard, and now I'm having the original problem again. I went back to the setup that last worked, and that won't work either. I now have no idea what is going on.

It's a corsair cx600m. I'm back up and running again, this time with everything connected. I'm now scared to shut down my computer. Every time I have done so I've had the issue. Restarting is fine.
