Okay so I have a own built computer (Gaming) with an evga 500w power supply. It started making a noise on start up that would eventually go away. Now however, the noise doesn't go away. It coincides with the PSU fan spinning, so it is definitely something to do with that. When I put the computer on its side the noise goes away which is very weird.

Is there any way I can fix it without having to purchase a new PSU?
Many Thanks.

This happened with me before when I used the system with a non branded psu that came with the casing , the system use to make drone noise & when I hit the casing the noise would go away or change , I put in wd 40 in the psu fan it fixed the noise for months but it came back so I replaced the psu with a branded psu

It can be fan/bearing noise and a small drop of oil might help. Or it could be coil whine where you'd have to be pretty good at electronics and be able to re-stake the offending coils. It's easier to replace it. This time with a good quality power supply from tiers 1, 2a or 2b of http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-1804779/power-su...

Yeah oil would do but wouldn't the noise come back after a few months?

^ WD 40 is not a proper lubricant. When it evaporates, it's worse than with the original problem. Do you have any electronics experience? (there can be close to 200VDC inside) I have seen wires sag inside and gently rub on the fan blades. It can also be the fan bearing. Where do you shop - some pretty good deals out there.

A drop of engine oil is OK. But a new PSU is better.

The thing is, Ive only had the computer for like a month. I havent been doing anything ridiculous on it, just playing games and doing homework really. Im on it now and the noise is very loud. And I shop amazon, Newegg, wherever the good deals are! :)

If you've only had it a month then the power supply WILL be under warranty and you can do a RMA return by talking to the shop.

First, check that is something like deep dust is in bearing of PSU fan. If PSU is in warranty change it otherwise open it and check fan, use very little engine oil drops.
