It is safe to put sleep/hibernate your PC. I normally just go through the windows button rather than the keyboard.

I don't use the keyboard, but my PC goes to sleep after a few min of inactivity every day. My PC doesn't get powered off for weeks at a time.
I know of no reason NOT to use sleep mode. Your hard drive powers down and powers up is the only possible "wear" you could be doing.
