Trouble moving Windows to SSD from HDD

I have installed an SSD in my GF's computer. Due to certain programs we do not want to reinstall, I am trying to clone the HDD to the SSD and then wipe the HDD. I have uninstalled all the programs that will need to be reinstalled on the HDD after this process has been completed and the HDD size is now smaller than the formatted SSD size.

I planned to use WD Acronis to image the drive as I have done this before when upgrading this computer from a 500gb HDD to a 2tb HDD. Problem is, after selecting clone disk and selecting the source drive, the SSD is grayed out and I cannot select it as the destination drive.

I then found another program many people use to close a Windows installation to an SSD and it lets me select both drives, but then gives a weird error saying: "target disk is the same with source disk, please select another disk".

If anyone has any input that would be great.

Another thing. This is a modified prebuilt from Gateway. The only thing still from the Gateway is the Motherboard and OS. If I did have to reinstall, can I just use any Windows Disk for 8.1 64-bit and then use the CD key on the sticker that came attached to the OEM computer case, or do I need something else?

CloneZilla can do individual partitions, rather than the whole drive.

Or, Partition Migrate purports to move 'only' the OS

Not free, though.
It looks like there is also quite a large recovery partition on the HDD. I don't want to move that, just the Windows installation.

Last night I used EaseUS to clone the C: Gateway partition to the SSD but it assigned it the letter A and the computer did not recognize it as a Windows installation to be able to boot from.

Also, that's a typo on my part. It should read the gateway C partition IS smaller than the SSD. The actual HDD has a large recovery partition that is making the drive itself large, but I just want the windows installation moved, not the recovery partition.
