The fan on my XFX HD667X started failing recently; XFX sent me a replacement fan that I'm trying to install. This is my first time replacing a cooler of any type. The new cooler came with 2 small spongy rubber spacers (?) attached to the card side of the cooler. The old cooler didn't have anything equivalent on it. Are these just shipping material that should be removed before installation? Or are they to protect underlying components from contact with the cooler? Will the cooler still make solid thermal contact with the GPU with these pads in place? Has anyone seen anything like this?

Do those spongy spacer line up right over the GPU chip and another large chip? They may be thermal pads, basically like thermal paste for CPU but with some thickness to help bridge the airgap.

They are there to reduce sound. They make your system run quieter. If they are in the way you can remove them. I would just leave them on.
