Hard disc and graphics card compatibility

Sorry about this noobish question but i'm kinda new to this. How do you check if a graphics card or a hard disc that i want to buy is compatible with the motherboard on my pc?

There is no compatibility for hard drives - if the motherboard has the necessary connections for your hard drive, then it's fine.

For GPUs, just be aware what type of PCIe the mobo supports (1, 1.1, 2.0, or 3.0). Typically PCIe is backwards compatible, but you don't want to go farther back than PCIe 2.0.

What's your point? So, what if it's an IDE motherboard? If he has an IDE hard drive with IDE connections on the motherboard then he's fine. Same if he has a SATA hard drive with a motherboard that has SATA connections - that's MY point.

just referencing that there is a potential compatibility, although it could be fixed with an adapter cable.

cannot plug an ide drive into a sata port
