I currently have a Radeon HD 7870. I am looking at buying a R9 270 or R9 290X for another computer. Will either the R9 270 or the R9 270X Crossfire with the 7870 if I want to combine them in a single computer somewhere down the road? (My understanding is that the R9 270 is a re-named 7870.)

Also, if Crossfiring them won't work, should I get a 270 or 270X, is there an NVidia in the same price range that is better?

i think 7870 should be able to CF with 270/270X. for AMD cards as long as they are based on the same chip you can CF them. nvidia is more strict in this regard. even if both card have same spec (in case of re branding) they will not be able to pair in SLI configuration.
