So I took apart my PC last night to test a friend's video card for him, and when i reassembled mine I could not get any sound whatsoever.

I was running a 3.5mm jack cable to RCA from my computer's back panel a receiver, then the receiver to my speakers. Now with that connection, my computer shows that it reconizes the speakers under Playback Devices, but there is not any sound coming out of the receiver. I then tried a spdif cable from my computer to the receiver, again with no luck.

I've tried updating my sound drivers, but in my BIOS there is no option for enabling HD Audio. I am completely stumped, as I have tried everything that I could understand online to no avail.

My only other ideas as to what could be causing this are that my front panel audio connection pins are somehow connected wrong, but I checked them against my manual and they seem to be alright. The other idea I've had is that over time, from my headset falling off my desk, the front panel audio connections may have been bent out of place, and that just now might be affecting my audio?

This was working fine up til yesterday! Please reply with any ideas, I've been at this for hours now and I'm at my wits end.

I am running Windows 7 64 bit, have a Asus Sabertooth 990FX motherboard and the receiver I am using is a Sony STR-DG710. The case is an AZZA Solano, if that is needed as well.

Also- would buying a new sound card be a simple fix to this issue?

I don't see how your pins could be wrong unless you disconnected them when you installed the other video card, which wouldn't make sense since it's unnecessary. If it worked before but doesn't now it has to be a setting or be related to the driver that was installed for the other card. Try uninstalling all the display drivers using this utility and then reinstall the display drivers. Many display drivers affect sound because of the HDMI sound channel. I would also uninstall all sound device drivers. Then reinstall your display driver with the newest one available as well as the sound device driver. Make sure you're using the correct drivers from the ASUS website as the 990FX Sabertooth has several revisions that have different components.

Still no dice- I uninstalled all AMD and NVIDIA drivers from my card and my friends, and all audio drivers. Installed and updated all, and still no sound. I tested this connection with my phone, and music plays fine, so something is up with my computer.

Playback devices shows that Windows is still recognizing my speakers, and is playing music, but there still is not any sound. Any other ideas?

I did have the pins disconnected at one point because I was re-organizing some cables, so that's why I thought those could be the issue. I checked them and they seem fine; however, I tried checking BIOS to select HD Audio and couldn't find an option for that.

Run dxdiag.exe from the start menu run box and look at the sound tabs to see if anything show up abnormal. Make sure to check the box that says check whql digital signatures then wait about thirty seconds for it to verify them. Check each tab for any listed issues.

No problems found under my speaker input, Realtek Digital Output, and Realtek Digital Output (Optical).

Check to make sure you have the correct connector plugged in to the board, there is normally one marked HD and one marked AC97. There are also sound headers on most boards for both types and one generally doesn't work with the other. You might try unplugging it altogether and then boot into windows and see if the back jacks work without the front panel plugged in.

That didn't do anything, I tried AC97 and HD already. Any other ideas? I might just go buy a sound card tomorrow and see if that does anything

Just a thought: Have you opened the RealTek HD Audio manager and checked the settings in there?

You're not the first person with sound issues with this board. I was trying to help somebody else with a similar issue, actually, two of them, just this week. We never solved the problem but in both instances the problems began after a hardware change to the video card. I have this same board and have never had a similar issue, and I change hardware out all the time. It could be an issue with the onboard sound itself, perhaps inherently faulty chipsets, and if all else fails the add in soundcard should likely solve the issue. Sucks to have to do that though.

Yeah, it recognizes the speakers and thinks that its playing.

1. Try different speakers in audio jacks.

2. Try restoring to a point before the friend's graphics card install. There may have been audio software installed with the GPU that has conflicted with yours.

Ah well, thanks for all the help trying though. If this is an issue that the 990FX has, I might try and see if I can RMA it, though I might have had it for too long or something. I'll try a sound card and hope it works!

Good luck then. Let me know if you need further help.

Actually, there is a setting in your BIOS under Advanced menu > Onboard devices configuration as seen below.

Might try going back into the BIOS as Darkbreeze shows. Look for that setting.
Open UFI BIOS. Click on tab at top Advanced; scroll down and click on the SB Azalia Config.
Enable the first one, HD Azalia Device. Set the second to Front Panel HD. And the last: mine runs just fine on the SPDIF setting. If you set it to HDMI then everything wants to run on the HDMI Video CArd drivers.
Worth a shot.

Absolutely forgot that some people leave the UEFI bios on the easy uefi. Change that crap to the advanced menu and then you'll have a whole bunch of other options.

CRAP! Me too. kwmclen, You have to reset your UEFI Bios to advance mode to make the tabs available. Then follow the suggestion I gave last entry.
@darkbreeze, THANKS !

Went for the sound card, all is good now. Thanks for the help!

No problem. Too bad you had to buy another component but perhaps you're new card provides better sound and in any case hopefully you'll not have any further problems. Take care.
