Corsair Force GS 128GB Running at 50% Speeds & Other HDD Issues

Hi there. A while ago I built a gaming PC with these specs:

ASUS Maximus VI Hero
i5 4670K
2x GTX 760s
etc.

I bought a Corsair Force GS to serve as my boot drive, and a 1TB WD Caviar Black to serve as storage. Ever since building this, there have been numerous hard drive related issues. 50% of the time my PC while booting into Windows 8 decides not to boot at all, either giving me a BSOD after watching the load icon turn for a while, telling me there's an inaccessible boot device, or prepares for automatic repairs of some kind that don't work. When my PC boots into Windows, normally after restarting my PC several times, everything seems to run fine. Other times, my 1TB drive doesn't show up in My Computer, or decides to disconnect randomly. (Note: All drivers are up to date, AHCI is enabled, disk drives are set to never turn off, SSD is optimized in every sense of the word, etc.) I've switched out every single SATA cable several times, tried different ports on the Intel SATA controller (I never use the secondary ASMedia SATA controller), to no avail.

Today I decided to run several benchmark tools on the SSD and I received a 275MB/s read, and a 200MB/s write. It is advertised as well over 500MB/s for read and write. I also ran SeaTools and Western Digital's tests on each drive many times and passed with flying colours.

What could possibly be happening right now? Is it more likely that I have 2 bad drives, or a bad SATA controller? Any help would be extremely appreciated. Please let me know if you need any additional information from me to assess my issues. Thanks!

If it is an option, I would RMA the SSD (do a secure erase before you do so though) if its under warranty and get a replacement and see. If it works fine, then it was the SSD. If not, then it's probably the SATA controller. What about an HDD? If you have one that is capable of 6gbps, try that.

The things that come to mind are: Driver update, Bad SATA Controller, or the SSD itself. If you can get your hands on...

I've never actually ran the system without both drives plugged in. Oddly, for the last few hours my PC has been running smoothly and after running an ATTO benchmark, I'm getting over 500mb/s read/write on the SSD now. (Switched my SATA cables once again). I fear this is only a fluke, though, because this is typically how it goes. Works 50% of the time as it should. Thoughts?

EDIT: Just to be clear, all SATA cables I've used thus far have been 6GB SATAIII.

This is a fresh install, literally less than a day old. I have Malwarebytes installed, however, but I don't think this is the issue. Especially considering this has been happening since day 1. And yes, Corsair SSD Toolbox is installed with the latest firmware as well. I've tried my best to cover all my bases and be sure.

While SSD's usually do not run as advertised (slightly less performance), they normally get near the write speeds. My MX100 hits about 480 write and 420 read for the 512gb version. That doesn't really help you but it could be a bad SATA controller.

Yep, as I suspected, I booted up this morning (took me 2 tries), and my storage drive was not listed in my computer. Intel's Rapid Storage was showing my SSD as 3Gb/s, and my storage drive as an empty internal plug, or some sort. After rebooting once again, both drives showed up, only my SSD is now once again rated at 3Gb/s instead of 6 like it was yesterday.

What in the actual **** is going on lol.

Hmm well if it's rated at 3Gb/s then that explains half speed... Maybe it's the SSD itself? Do you have access to a different SSD to test this theory? If so, you could find out whether it is indeed your SATA controller or perhaps the SSD itself.

I don't have another SSD handy, but I do have external SATA cables that will allow me to test my SSD outside of my PC. I think I might just try that at some point today to be sure. Is this a viable option or is there another way you'd recommend to test it?

Thanks for your help so far, btw, I really appreciate it.

Also, if your sata cable isn't capable of the speeds, then you should definitely get a sata 3 capable of 6gbps or more.

Seems like these are my best options then. Thanks so much for the help, and I'll be sure to take your advice into account over the next few days deciding what I'm going to do about this.

Happy troubleshooting. Thanks again!
