I have a printer attached to my computer via a usb to parallel port connector. The operating system is XP and the printer is a HP Deskjet 3816. When I print the print goes to the printer queue and then I get the message Error printing. Do I need special drivers as I am using a usb to parallel port connector?

why use a usb to parallel? don't you have any US port? you could atleast buy a pci usb. and to answer your question. yes probably. (since the driver your using is probably for the parallel one.)

I have connected my printer with a usb cable. When I print now the print goes to the print cue the status says "Spooling" but then the print disappears
and nothing comes out. I installed the printer and driver with the HP installation software for this printer.

I used the drivers from the HP site and I still get the print spooling and disappearing. Is there anywhere else I could get a more recent driver from?
