AMD FX-8320 Overheating Issue

I am hoping to get some insight about diagnosing heat issues.

For simplicity's sake, here are my system components::

CPU: AMD FX-8320 (No user applied OC)
CPU Heatsink: Stock AMD Cooler
Motherboard: MSI 990FXA-GD65V2
GPU: HIS IceQ H787Q2G2M (Radeon 7870 GHz Edition 2GB) (Also no user applied OC)
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 8 GB (2 x 4 GB) 1600
PSU: Corsair TX CMPSU-650 TX
SSD: OCZ Vertex 2 128GB
HDD: 3x WDC WD10EADS 1TB
HDD: 1x ST1000DM003 1TB
Case: Corsair Carbide 400R

To say the least, I'm concerned about some CPU heat issues I've been having recently. At idle (windows loaded, all non-system applications closed) my cpu temp reads around 40 C - 50 C. While browsing the internet or watching a movie, my CPU is likely around 60 C. I assume that the stock cooler may be part of the issue. However, I've read a lot of posts and most people aren't having nearly the problem I'm having. While playing BF4, my CPU temps spike to 80 C - 90 C. If i'm watching Netflix on my second monitor while playing BF4 on the first, the CPU overheats and will shut the computer down after a half hour.

Also, While doing low-intensity browsing and media consumption tasks, the system frequently freezes. During these freezes, my cursor can still move but the applications themselves are not operating. After about 15-25 seconds, things will resume operation as normal. I'm not sure if this is related but I thought it might be worth mentioning.

So my question is, should I be ordering an aftermarket cooler ASAP? Should I be buying a new CPU? Should I be trying to see if the motherboard is defective? An RMA is out of the question, the system is too old. Any advice on how to diagnose this more effectively would be appreciated. I've been using speed fan and watching the temperatures on a second monitor. Which is a bit tedious.

UPDATE: Looks like I need to get aftermarket cooling at least. IF you have any suggestions of things that work for you, please include them. I am strongly considering a water cooled solution.

I'm sorry to hear that
Unfortunately, it could be a number of things. What you can do is make sure these things have been double checked:
1. Make sure you have a sufficient amount of thermal paste applied
2. Airflow is adequate (use a program to check temps or just put you hand in your case for a ghetto style check whilst playing battlefield). You can never have enough fans. Make sure you have a good balance between push and pull. also make your fans run full speed.

An aftermarket cooler will ALWAYS be a good investment. you can purchase a very good CPU cooler for £20-£30 like the Evo 212.
Battlefield 4 is a very CPU dependent game and AMD runs louder and hotter all round usually.
Hope this helps :)

Any idea whether my freezing issues might be caused by the overheating problems? I know the crashes are. I've taken logs and the crashes are preceded by heat spikes. But I'm not sure how to explain the freezing. Might be a different problem entirely?

The 8350 runs hot from what I've heard, and since the 8320 is similar I'd expect no less. Freezing can happen if A. You're running out of RAM or B. CPU Load is 100% or a combination of the two.

Just spend 35 USD for an Evo 212 and see if it fixes your problem.

Most likely, yes
