I have WD external hard drive that has died. Making a small noise, like it's trying to boot up, but it will not show up in files to view. Any ideas on how to recover lost files? Tried it all usb Ports and on another pc.

Hey kendence. Sorry to hear that you're having trouble with your external drive. When the HDD starts making unusual sounds/noises is one of the first signs that it's failing. The safest way to do a data recovery is if you try a professional solution.
Here's a link with a little more info on the subject: http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/70
And here's a link with our data recovery partners: http://support.wdc.com/recovery/index.asp?lang=en
Note that if the drive is in warranty you will NOT void it if you use a data recover company and you'll be able to return it afterwards.

Good luck with your drive. Let me know if you have any questions.
