Well at the same time, if it's already 35c on idle it's not going to drop a whole bunch :p

Can you keep your temps in check at reasonable fan speeds? If so, it may not be for you but I'm a total advocate for delidding given how simple and relatively safe the entire process is with a vice and blowdryer (with or without the hammer method), unlike the razor delid that requires a lot of delicacy and patience in separating the IHS from the board.

Using OCCT now to stress instead of Prime, with a delidded 790k it averages at 62 on the hottest core for the majority of a 5 min test, with 72 being the max at around 2000 RPM's (performance level) on a h80i with a higher voltage and frequency than their 4.6:

Environmental variables are definitely a large factor in any discrepancies, but the difference between my stress temps and the ones above range from 18-8 degrees c. I delidded before even stressing the chip, lol, so as to the actual difference is something I couldn't tell you. With both recent multithreaded games and the Dolphin emulator I'm not really seeing above about 47 or so, maybe there's low 50's every now and then but nothing to worry about.

The gains/reductions for delidding are probably much higher for Ivy Bridge though.
