Instead of shutting down and letting the updates install, I restarted. On restarting, ckdsk ran and corrupted the system. I now get the error message
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTHUI.DLL is either not designed to run on Windows or it has an error. Try reinstalling the program again using the origional media.
This dell laptop was purchased used from ebay and had no origional media. If i could create a boot disk with my older XP that would allow me to access the files on the Windows 7 hard drive, I might be able to delete or replace this file. Note that safe boot gives me the same error.

Any help?

You probably have more than just that one file corrupted.....my suggestion would be to create a bootable USB stick or DVD from the windows 7 ISO - do you know what version you have? (Windows 7 Home, Windows 7 Pro, etc....) Only the correct version will match your license key....I hope you have the license key....
