I was wondering your guys opinion on upgrading from a 660 Ti (Evga) to a 280X. I'm aware the framerates are better but I prefer Nvidia because of the driver support and Adaptive V-Sync.
Is there any other downside to going from a 660 Ti to 280 in terms of shader quality, and raw graphics quality? I'm wondering if this is a worthy upgrade and beyond driver support if there's any other downsides to this upgrade as far as quality and raw performance.
Also will a 600W PSU (Corsair CX600) with 48A on a single rail be able to handle the 280X sufficiently? Thanks in advance.

I'm not 100% certain on the advantages to switching, aside from the ones you listed and perhaps the extra gig of VRAM in terms of future plans and resolution progressiveness. I like the 280X for it's versatile crossfire options via 280/280X/7970/7950. Multi monitor set-ups will obviously benefit and any resolution superseding 1080p there's a benefit.
I'd totally say for current 280X price points it's a worthwhile option

Not really sure if that's an "upgrade". True, you'll get a few more FPS in most games, but in the process you'll lose your PhysX, Adaptive VSync, FXAA, TXAA, HBAO+, and Nvidia driver support. Only you can decide if that tradeoff is worth it.
Is the 280X your only option? Is the GTX 660 Ti not meeting your needs?

The average R9-280X is just under 22% faster for gaming.
That also assumes no bottlenecking by the CPU so if you have less than a good modern i5 the difference, on average, shrinks to less than this.
I think upgrading for a 15 to 20% improvement in frame rates, especially with your preference (as is mine) for NVidia makes little sense.
I suggest saving up for a significantly better card like the GTX970 (or possibly GTX960).

I wouldn't bother. a poster above gave you a nice graph and also pointed out the extra fps gain is minimal, and you are going to AMD, which is quite frankly, inferior to Nvidia cards. I also have a 660ti and it flies.. why even consider upgrading at this point? wait until Oculus CV1 is out, probably this time next year, then buy yourself a beast. in the mean time, your card is good enough.

Its not a worthwhile upgrade , I wouldn't upgrade before another year maybe as the 660ti is still a very solid gpu . I like AMD cards and think that they provide best bang for your buck and I like that I am jumping now in the Nvidia territory where all of my AMD views going to be disliked however in your case the 280x is only worthwhile upgrade if you plan to crossfire it in the future or you want raw FPS increase , AMD has other good alternatives for the Nvidia features maybe not as good but they are still solid.
In other words , the 660ti will still do its job just fine .
If the 660ti isn't satisfying you then you might want to look at the 770 as Nvidia provide hassle free Drivers and some nice features but yet again the performance difference isn't as big as the 770 will more or less act like a 280x however you'll have the chance to SLI the 770 one year down the road as it will be cheaper ( provided that you can afford it and have the minimum hardware requirements ) .

well 20% is nothing to great but it would mean going from 40 fps to 48 fps and running them in CF is nothing short of easy and awesome. my 7950's push 1440p at 60 fps and ultra settings on everything. just look at the 7990 an how it it just better the gtx 780 ti
as for vsync I have not used it even when i only had one 7950.
msaa looks great on games as far as AA goes and makes a good improvement

r9 290 xfx double dissipation going for $320. this is the beast that is the now if you can splurge
they have just announced that they are cutting the prices of the r9 290's so we may even see better prices in the near future. this is a 4 GDDR card and at the rebated price is hard to beat.
I am not a fanboy of anything i just want performance and price and at $70 more than a gtx 760 it is hard to argue
otherwise what i did is buy still warrantied msi twin frzr's from ebay for $125 a piece. already had to send one back and 7 days later a repaired 7950 came back without question. (my kid dumped juice on it somehow)
my last card was an nvidia and I have not noticed any real difference in gaming between the two.

Why mention crossfiring if the OP is just looking at buying a new single gpu? "Thanks for your first contribution. jk"? No need for that. I doubt there's any reason to go for a 7xxx series card now anyways, not to mention that the 660ti was roughly just as good as the 7950 to begin with.
Besides, I'm with everyone else saying the 660 ti should be good enough for now, especially if the OP likes nvidia drivers better. I would recommend staying with what you have and saving your money for maxwell based nvidia gpus. By waiting, you will not have to replace your power supply (hopefully).
However, if you're in more of a hurry to get better performance, its really hard to argue against a good deal on an r9 290 that's much less than $400.

my snarky comment was just based against another comment that really did not add anything to the conversation other than AMD is inferior. I like nvidia more but AMD is not inferior. this was also his first comment and as a supporter of tom's i do not like it when newbs but their head in without content.
the only reason i added the 7950 is that you can get two of then for $250 and that is allot of performance for the price and just another option when looking at the $250 price point
