hi guys i have a pc built ready but i am confused as to which CPU should i but i will be using my pc for purely gaming and i just need to decide whether to buy the i5 -2500k or the fx 8320 ? i know 2500k is old now(getting it cheap for 150$) but i will play games like skyrim which favours quad core but i will also play all the next gen games so i need to decide also what is the difference between the two in terms of gaming ? thx

Would you like some advise from some one that actually owns a FX8320?

My Rig:

Fx 8320 @ 3.8ghz (which is what the bios will set if you select performance options) not OC
Corsair H60 Cpu cooler
ASUS M5A99FX PRO motherboard
16gb GSKILL DDR3 RAM @1600mhz
2 X Gigabyte GTX770 Windforce 3x 4GB in SLI
SAMSUNG 840 EVO SSD 500GB
SEAGATE HDD 1TB
Corsair 850 watt psu.

What I guess you are asking is: is there an advance of one cpu over another? Not really. You wont notice the difference. My FX8320 can max out any game with the 2 770's. Hell, even if I use just one 770 I could still get 40-50 fps on Crysis 3 maxed out with MSAA x 2. With 2 cards I can play the game at 80-100fps with MSAA x 4 @ 1080p. I dont know what you would get with an...
I recommend the i5-4460.

The i5-4460 is roughly 20% more powerful than an i5-2xxx at the same frequency. Since it Turbos to 3.4GHz it's comparable to the i5-2500K at roughly 4.1GHz.

(the i5-4460 is also a Haswell Refresh which I believe makes it run slightly cooler but again it's far, far cooler than an overclocked Sandy Bridge which translates to much less power needed)

"Compared to Sandy Bridge, Haswell looks even more impressive. The Core i7-4770K outperforms the i7-2700K by 7 - 26%, with an average performance advantage of 17%."

You also are going to have a much newer motherboard and generate far less heat (which means less fan noise with fan control enabled for the CPU cooler).

As for AMD, every one of their CPU's causes CPU bottlenecking in most games. On a per-core basis the Intel CPU is roughly 40 to 45% better at the same frequency! This is why you get bottlenecks when a game only uses two cores of an FX-6300 for example which has six, but those two cores can't process quick enough.

Considering the TOTAL cost of the system an extra $40 or so to upgrade to a good i5 CPU seems a small price to pay.

i can overclock 2500k better and as i mentioned i do plan on playing games like skyrim which favour quad core so doesnt that make 2500k the better choice if i get them for the same price ?

Would you like some advise from some one that actually owns a FX8320?

My Rig:

Fx 8320 @ 3.8ghz (which is what the bios will set if you select performance options) not OC
Corsair H60 Cpu cooler
ASUS M5A99FX PRO motherboard
16gb GSKILL DDR3 RAM @1600mhz
2 X Gigabyte GTX770 Windforce 3x 4GB in SLI
SAMSUNG 840 EVO SSD 500GB

What I guess you are asking is: is there an advance of one cpu over another? Not really. You wont notice the difference. My FX8320 can max out any game with the 2 770's. Hell, even if I use just one 770 I could still get 40-50 fps on Crysis 3 maxed out with MSAA x 2. With 2 cards I can play the game at 80-100fps with MSAA x 4 @ 1080p. I dont know what you would get with an I5-2500k but Im sure it wont be much better.

Anyway i5's and 83xx chips are about on par with each other. Some things are better done on one chip than the other but again the difference is only noticed by the people who constantly benchmark their PC's instead of enjoying them.

What you need to consider is what is coming down the road. If you get an I5-2500k because itis all you can afford RIGHT NOW. Then that is perfectly fine. It gives you the option to upgrade to an I7 at a later time when you can afford it. If you go with a Fx 83xx chip. You are pretty much stuck because it is the fastest chip they offer right now and it looks like a couple more years before anything better will come along.

As an Fx 83xx owner, I am completely satisfied with this cpu! I went AMD because I wanted the fastest chip for the cheapest price. That is exactly what it is. It is hot so you need aftermarket cooling that can handle 125w chip. It has performed amazingly well for 150 bucks. With the right cooling and know how you can squeeze an extra 1Ghz of speed out of that chip. I have had mine running at 4.5Ghz and I have heard people pushing them to 5Ghz.

So these are the things you can consider when choosing your CPU

AMD = Turbo diesel truck.

Power hungry work hoarse that gets the job done and can handle a heavy work load

Intel = Corvette

Fast, owned by old men with a lot of money and gives you plenty bragging rights.
