Built my first system about 3 days ago with the following:
msi z97 g45 gaming mobo, intel i5 4690k processor, xfx r9 290x video card, corsair cx750m 750w power supply, and corsair vengeance 8gb 1600 ddr3 ram.
I have had the computer up and running for about 3 days now and used the graphics card to display on my monitor (via hdmi) all I have done with computer is download various stuff, nothing that would put the graphics card under load. Anyway I left the computer in idle for about 1/2 hour to let it download and came back to find a black screen, restarted the computer and found the display came back on for about a minute before going black again. restarted the computer again
and it only had a black screen (didn't output to the tv). So I decided to see if the mobo video would work so I connected a vga cable to it and got it to display on the monitor.
I was just wondering if you guys think that this is a defective video card or if it could be something else. Also all drivers have been installed. Any help is appreciated

Ensure your Graphics Card is sat firmly in the PCI-E x16 slot, not at an angle. Ensure the Power Connectors are firmly attached to the GPU.

Ensure the fans on the card are spinning.

Boot your system with the Motherboard's Integrated Graphics Chipset

Set your desktop resolution to 800 x 600.

Boot your system with the Graphics Card and see if that helps.

Checked plugs and ensured that the graphics card was sitting in place, still no display. Fans are spinning so the graphics card is getting power. Lowered my resolution to lowest possible setting (1024×768) and rebooted system through graphics card and still had no display. Was wondering if I did a full reinstall off widows and erased all memory if that might help?

UPDATE:
So I erased everything off my hard drives and reinstalled windows, when I went to install the drivers from online it says that failures occurred during instalation, what does this mean?

Have you installed windows without error? If yes don`t install the GPU yet update your drivers first without your GPU. If all the drivers were installed then you can insert your GPU and then install its drivers. Then update your GPU`s drivers.

I installed all other drivers and then installed the gpu, tried installing driver via cd, but couldnèt get it to open setup. I just downloaded the drivers from online before, is it better to use the cd. because if it is then i guess i need a new cd. never had any issues installing windows or any of the other drivers, just the gpu drivers that are the issue.

I managed to install the catalyst software it said with warnings during the process, but when I tried installing the beta drivers it said that failures occured within afew seconds of starting. I should have mentioned from the start that it displays no signal detected on the monitor when I try using my gpu.

Hello, so let me try to put this together.

New Rig, untested hardware.

290x worked fine for 3 days, with drivers, 100% funtionality, as expected,

went away for awhile, came back to black screen. restarted, worked for 1 minute, then black screen

Thoughts- (did you have sound? if not, it could be overheating slowly. bad fan? very unlikely while idle...)

reinstalled windows, gpu is working fine now?, install drivers, errors during driver installation?
- Did you install anything else first? spyware/malware?

It doesn't sound like a common GPU related issue. It could be a power supply failing, Ram errors,

If i had to guess, id start with the PSU, as well as Swap the GPU out for a different one.

maybe you should call in so we can quickly solve this. 800 880 3225. *USA

Try to clean install AGAIN.

1. Download DDU in the web (just search it)
2. Run DDU in safemode.
3. Uninstall GPU in device manager.
4. Run CC cleaner to clean files.
5. Run CC cleaner to fix registry.
6. Reinstall AMD catalyst (14.4 or 14.7 which ever you like)

Post for further progress.

Reinstalled windows again, after full reset was complete, I tried installing installing catalyst 14.7 but it said failures occurred during installation. I think my system can't find my gpu

UPDATE: found an old computer about 6 years old of mine that had a video card in it, put it in my new pc and booted it up using the hdmi port in it. I got display through it so I now have confirmed that it is something wrong with the gpu. I would test the gpu in another system but I don't have that option, so I'm going to send it back to have the manufacturer test it

I have the same issue, computer works just fine with an older GPU but with the ASUS r9 290x there's no display. It worked fine for 2/3 months and then last night turned off the PC and today when turned on there was no display, but there was sound and everything else was fine. Going to send it back for warranty. Can you tell me if that solved your problem?
