Hello all,

I am building a new system AND upgrading to Windows 7 from XP. I plan on using Widows easy transfer but with a twist. My old (current) system's HDD was very slow and most likely failing. I was able to clone it to a new 1TB Seagate hybrid drive. Now I want to build a new system and use my current, new HDD. I want to run Widows easy transfer on my old current system, then build my new system with the same HDD, do the custom Win 7 install then reinstall my apps and finally move my old data back with Easy transfer. Will this even work or should I just back up all my data and then format and install Windows 7 and manually move all my data?

My new system will be:

Asus Z97-A mobo
i5 4690K
Cooler Master 212 plus
8gb G. Skill Aries 1600Hmz ddr3
Fractal Design XL R2 Titanium case
Corsair CW600 psu
and the above mentioned 1 TB Seagate hybrid drive with Windows XP media SP3 already installed

Solution
OP, what you propose will work just fine. Use the Transfer Wizard to back up all user data and program settings onto external media, do a clean installation of Windows 7, restore user data and program settings, then reinstall applications.
