The Phenom II X6 1090T is weaker in single-threaded tasks and roughly the same strength in multithreaded tasks. I'm not going to fully explain how, since I should sleep tonight, but it's due to how the 'more advanced' Piledriver architecture gets diminishing returns from shared resources as additional cores per module are activated.

The FX-6300 will be noticeably quicker in newer games, between its greater core-per-core performance and its more modern instruction sets.

A stock 1090T bottlenecked my brother's GTX 560 severely in some games. Not sure why your friend would even want to trade, perhaps he planned to sell the 1090T for a profit. Since they're discontinued and are considered retro beasts with rare and valued support for older 3D instruction sets, the Phenom II X6s generally sell for very nice prices on ebay. More than they're worth in terms of modern performance, at least. It's not too unusual for them to sell for ~$140 in good condition with the cooler, which you'll recognize as enough to buy an FX-8320 or an i3-4330, both of which are excellent modern performers for the price.

The Phenom II 1090T does overclock well, I suppose. He did say there would be absolutely no overclocking though.
