I'm attempting to use an external hard drive on my Samsung Ativ Book 9 and have been unable to resolve some issues.

Upon plugging in the device it loads two Drive (E and D), one is primary storage and one is a backup partition. Then just a few seconds later the WIndows close and the computer makes the device disconnect sound (does the sounds quite a few times usually). I have changed the power settings so it does not allow it the turn off etc. I have the latest windows updates and all of my drivers are also up to date.

When the device is first plugged in and loaded the device manager shows the correct name of the device. Then once it disconnects the device name changes to simply "USB Device".

It's completely impossible to use and I would greatly appreciate any incite anyone may have.

Also, the device constantly has power yet.

Hey ZackC77. Try all the basic troubleshooting. Different cable (not longer than 12"), different ports, computers etc. Even though the drivers are up to date you could also try reinstalling them or rolling back a version. Does the drive stay connected (as a "USB device") after the initial disconnect?

I have tried everything listed, it does work on other computers; but the data that needs to be transferred is on this one. I have tried uninstall and re-installing. Yes after the device disconnects it stays as "USB Device" and continues to power the drive.

Hmm so the problem is only with this laptop in particular. Have you tried another external HDD with it? I've seen some people having issues with external HDDs which use USB 3.0 and when the drive is connected to a device with a USB port that's 3.0 - it disconnects, but when it's connected to a USB port that's 2.0 - there's no problem. So the issue in those cases has always been the USB 3.0 port or the drivers in particular. Is your situation similar (the external drive being a USB 3.0 device connected to your USB 3.0 ports on the laptop)?

I believe I have two usb 3.0 ports - I believe the device may be usb 2.0. I don't have any usb 2.0 ports. Could something such as speed be affecting this and if it is-is there a way to fix it?

What OS are you using? And does your laptop act the same if you plug another external drive or a USB stick for example? There are some Trojans that may have this effect whenever you connect an external mass storage device so I'd advice that you make a full scan of your computer with an Antivirus program. However if the problem continues you could try these solutions (they are however for Windows 7): http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/165554-usb-driver-...

Hope that helps.

I'm running Windows 8.1; USB stick drives work without any issues. Scan with Malwarebytes & Windows Defender are both clean.

OK, try going through the tutorial from my previous post to see if it helps. It's the same for Windows 8. Just open up file explorer, click on "Computer" and from there choose from the upper right side of the window "System properties", then on the left you'll see "Advanced System Properties" - click it. After that just follow the instructions from the link.
Here it is again - http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/165554-usb-driver-...

I hope this will help with your issue.
