Hi thanks for reading this, I believe my graphics card may have died on me but i want to know if it may be something else because some things don't add up.

I have a XFX HD 6870 BlackEdition and the card works fine when there is no drivers installed but when i do install the drivers the aforementioned actions happen and my pc freezes. i have tried other cards and they work fine with or without drivers but they are significantly lower in power consumption as my own XFX card.

I use windows 7 64bit.
8gb ram
IntelCore i5 750
Xfx HD 6780
Asus motherboard Evo p7p55d

Solution
If you're seeing screen artifacts during boot it's very likely the card is dying / has died.

The card probably runs fine without drivers because your computer is using the Motherboard's Integrated Graphics Chipset which is unrelated to your Graphics Card.

Try physically removing and reinstalling the Graphics Card.

Uninstall, Reboot and then Reinstall your GPU's Drivers (The latest, Non-Beta version).

It's a longshot but set your desktop resolution to 800 x 600 while the Graphics Card is physically removed from your system. Power off and reinstall the card.

Screen artefacts during boot are, unfortunately, usually the sign of a bad card, as mentioned above. If the card is still under warranty, or even if not...

I assume you have installed the latest updated graphics drivers for your 6870.

A 6870 needs about a 500w psu. If your psu is old or a cheap unit, it may not have sufficient power to run graphics intensive apps or games.
Running in basic mode without drivers needs less power.
Exactly what psu so you have?

All things can fail, and failure of your 6870 is a distinct possibility.

yeah my power supply isn't great but it is about 1 year old it shouldn't depreciate that quickly ... but i dont know much about these things.

Alpine 700W

The Lines come up while loading Windows, the Evo's personal bios works perfectly fine.

and i have done all the driver installs, clean installs.
The thing is when it happens the pc crashed without a blue screen i forgot to mention. i hope it hasn't failed only had it for like 2 years or 3 ... my previous card lasted like 4 years lol

Thanks !

But i will do it agian to make sure.

Hi again yeah i have bought a new one and it is being delivered its a Corsair and is tier 3 as that is the one i can afford its 750 watt partially modular.

a new development happend i installed windows agian and it had the same problem but then it actually loaded to the desktop then after 2 mins went to a blue screen ...

and the motherboard seems to be malfunctioning or the PSU as the top PCI express slot doesn't seem to get enough power or something as the pc wont start it will like spin the CPU fan once ... im thinking my motherboard may be the thing that is messed up ...

i put it in another pci Express slot and it worked and loaded and then the blue screen happened then.

Thanks for all the help and guidance it is much better knowing what's wrong than just getting a new pc thanks for that :D

i will post when I have the new power supply and then i will probably have to get a new motherboard...
