Hi, I have 2 separate partitions on a single hdd. One is mostly filled with my non gaming related stuff like documents, music and the other one contains all my games. I'm using Windows 8.1.

Both partitions are nearly entirely filled. Each partition is 250gb in size and they both have less than 10gb of free space left. I'm planning on getting a larger hdd eventually so should I combine partitions now or do it on the new hdd?

Also, are there any benefits/disadvantages to using partitions in a hdd?

How:

Partitions harken back to the days when OSs could not handle large drive. They are still used today on server environments to isolate systems. It helps with security and database systems. For home use there is very little need for partitions.

It is always safer to move your data to a new drive first. If any thing this will help to defragment your data.

Hop this helps.

Actually isolating some things can be good. If you take all you documents, anf things you want to keep forever(pictures, word files, videos, or whatever) and keep them on a separate partition, then your backup selection is easy. Just backup the entire partition. When you upgrade to a new system load the OS and applications to the OS partition, and restore your documents to the Data partition.
It makes it much easier because your all data gets put in the same location, and you don't have to guess or hope you have it all.

Will there be any problems with pathfinding (I'm not sure what the term for it is called)? I have Steam and my games installed in the D drive. If I move them to the C drive will there be any problems with opening them?

There may be some issues because when you install applications(games) they register their location in the registry. Steam is pretty good in allowing folders to be moved, but you may need to go into the steam client and point it to where your game folder is now. There should be something in steam help that explains how to move the games folder.
