Hello, i woke up in the morning only to hear my dog shaking off water, and then hearing my computer turn off. I attempted to turn it on, but it didn't work. i waited a day then tried unplugging my gpu and it turned on then plugged it in and it wouldn't boot. Next i switched out my 7950 for my 6770 and it turned on. I am currently using the computer with 6770 in it and have been for a day.

Does this mean my gpu is dead, or maybe my power supply has been damaged and is unable to power it? if it's the gpu, should i bother getting is tested?

Solution
The power requiements for the 7950 is 500watts minimum and for the 6770 is 450w minimum. Its possible that you were just on the threshhold of being able to power the 7950, espically if the psu has some "miles" on it and has had time for the caps to age and have a slight reduction in storage capacity.

You will have to just test your card in another computer or test a different power supply (or a differnt 7950) in your machine to now for sure.

This is why removing the side cover is not fixing your heat problem, its like using duct tape to fix a water leak. If your case is getting to hot then you need better fans for better airflow, or if your case does not allow you put in better fans then you need a better case.
Was your computer case open or something?

What is your power supply.

It is likely that the gpu is what is bad, but it is possible that the psu is just dead enough to not be able to provide enough power for the 7950. Does someone else have a computer with a good enough power supply for your test your card in??

My side panels were off as the GPU gets really hot and sometimes if ambient temperature is to high the display drivers stops working. My PSU is an Antec Neo Eco 520w. I only have a 420w sitting around but only has 1 6pin. Right now i'm using the same the Neo Eco psu with my 6770 and it's been fine so far.
