Hello.

I was wondering what CPU I should get for my sons gaming build. I've been looking at the i5 4690k but I was wondering if there was any others CPUs I could use Instead that are cheaper (preferably Intel CPUs). Price wise no more than the i5 4690k preferably less.

The Build

PCPartPicker part list

CPU Cooler: Corsair H80i 77.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler (£0.00)
Motherboard: Asus Z97-AR ATX LGA1150 Motherboard (£116.72 @ More Computers)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance Pro 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory (£66.96 @ Scan.co.uk)
Storage: Samsung 840 EVO 120GB 2.5" Solid State Drive (£0.00)
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive (£0.00)
Video Card: Sapphire Radeon R9 280X 3GB Dual-X Video Card (£193.99 @ Aria PC)
Case: BitFenix Neos Black/Silver ATX Mid Tower Case (£0.00)
Power Supply: EVGA 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply (£80.46 @ Amazon UK)
Case Fan: Corsair Air Series AF120 Performance Edition (2-Pack) 63.5 CFM 120mm Fans (£0.00)
Case Fan: Corsair Air Series SP120 High Performance Edition 62.7 CFM 120mm Fan (£0.00)
Total: £624.87

The stuff that's £0.00 is just stuff I don't need to buy.

Thanks in advance :)

Solution

Xeon doesn't have integrated GPU like the i3,i5 and i7 have so its cost less.

Build with cheaper i5 and better GPU. I changed the ram too, to get it closer to same price.

A 290x is a far better GPU than a 280x. :D

downgrading the processor and upgrading the card is good but keep the PSU as it is EVGA G2 are quality PSU but G1 is average PSU .
and why is the cooler , hdd , case and fans are (£0.00) are they free ??

That's the stuff I already have so I don't need to buy. I just put it so people so go saying the I need this and I need that when I already have it

yea i thought so anyways if this pc is for gaming then getting a stronger card will definitely boost up the performance just your cpu should be strong enough to support the card.

Would the http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/intel-cpu-bx80646g3420 support the 280x as I don't all that much money and the more saving the better. Also how would it compare when OC to the i5-4460?

Do not get the pentium. Stick with a locked i5. I just showed the 290x earlier, to show how much better performance you could get for roughly the same cost. Here is still better performance, for less than your build with a 4690k and Z97 board. If that is still too much, go with the 280x. It will still be a fast system. In a gaming machine, GPU tends to matter more than CPU, as long as said CPU can keep up with the GPU. A Pentium will not keep up with a 280x. Even an i3 would not keep up very well. The 280x is still pretty good for 1080p gaming, but the 290 would last a bit longer as it is borderline overkill for 1080p, for most games.

I might get one of them them. Which if any would you recommend for my build?

My dearly beloved i5 750 just died on me (messages of condolence should be sent here) :http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-2300697/dead-long-live.html so I've swapped over to a Z97/i5 4690K, which is currently at stock speed, carrying over a HD7950 graphics card (it's an R9 280 minus the 'X') into the (cry) 'upgrade'.
No harm in getting the 'K' version, even if you DON'T OC now, the option will be available later on and the H80i can handle a little extra heat without getting too noisy.
Unless your son is using a big high res (1440 or above) or multiple 1080 screens to play on a R9 280X is really enough. My HD7950 with such a powerful CPU behind it is running even heavy calibre AAA games like Metro LL and FC3 at max or near max settings at 50+FPS.
Long winded way to say: Get a 4690K and keep the R9 280X.
