Hi, can I run a Radeon HD 6990 on a 600w PSU, same question for the 9 280x and also which one would you rather buy in terms of pure performance?

The R9 280X is better and newer. Technically, yes, it should be able to power it, but it depends on the quality of the PSU. What PSU is it?

I believe it is a Corsair.. I'm just not sure because every site I go to seems to rate the 6990 higher than the R9 280 ..

Each card is going at about 230$ or 140 pounds, second hand.

Oh, my bad, I thought you were talking about the R9 280X. Anyhow, the difference isn't that much and I would get the R9 280, considering that it's newer and will have better driver support. The 6-generation GPUs are getting pretty far behind..

EDIT: I need the exact model of your PSU.

HD6990 is a pair of HD6970, R9-280X is a slightly overclocked HD7970 so really only one generation newer. In terms of performance the 6990 would still perform better then any of the single GPU solutions, with the possible exception of a single R9-290X which is an all new architecture.

No you should not run a HD6990 on a 600W supply, of nearly any quality. A single R9-280X would run fine on most 600W supplies even with a 125W CPU.

Worst case would be a Corsair CX600 which is an adequate supply.

I've got a i5 2500k that I overclocked to 4ghz, and 4 Gigs of ram, I dont know how much that would be in terms of power usage.

Also it is a R9-280x OC.

I currently have a Nvidia 560ti Direct Cu II Factory OC'd which is obviously not cutting it any more with the new gen games.

And the price I'd be paying for the R9-280x second hand, its the Gigabyte version with a 3 year warranty, how good is that price?

Well, you really need 4GB more of ram to go with your i5. Nothing wrong with the processor, you are just starving it of memory for modern titles.

Whatever you are willing to pay for a used card is up to you. Cheapest available new is about £190.

For most companies the warranty only applies to the original owner.
