I currently own a Gigabyte Z97-D3H. It is upgraded from my GA-H61M-S2PV. On my previous motherboard, I had 2 sticks of 2GB of RAM, totaling 4GB. I currently have 8GB on this motherboard. Because the MoBo features dual channel mode, I was wondering if I could have my stick of 8 by itself in one channel and the two 2s running together to total 12GB?

Yes that will work but I believe that it will no longer operate in dual channel mode. You may also run into issues as the memory is not part of the same kit but it definitely would not hurt to at least try if that is the route that you want to take.

You most usually need to install memory in matching pairs to run in dual channel mode. Since you are not doing it now with a single stick, it won't hurt anything to install the other pair you have laying around and see if will work. However, if you aren't doing anything that requires more than 8 gig, it won't make any noticeable difference.
