Hi guys. I have a query and I need some advice. I need to know where I stand with AM3+ motherboards. I currently have an FX9590 cpu on an Asus Crosshair V Formula Z motherboard (which I purchased in mid September 2012). I love this motherboard but it is 2 years old now and starting to show it's age. It cant compete against the latest intel LGA 1150 and 2011-3 motherboards. I really want to know if AMD and their partners will be releasing any new or updated AM3+ motherboards (ie - with PCIE3 lanes, etc) for 2014 and 2015?.

I have been reading articles wrt the new K12/X86 cpu and the AMD vp said that it is definitely going to be released in March 2016, although he also said the next 18 months are going to be a tough time for AMD. I am now wondering if AMD don't release any new/updated AM3+ motherboards, then they are going to lose a lot of AMD fans (possibly myself included). If I continue using my current rig until March 2016 and then upgrade to the new AMD K12 cpu and AM4 mobo, then my current rig will have poor resale value (post March 2016) and I will lose a lot of money. So should I stick with what I have or migrate to intel in the interim?. If I sell my current AMD cpu and mobo on ebay, I can still get a pretty decent price for them (and put this towards the new intel rig).

I'm thinking to go either for a 4790K (£250 on Amazon) or the 5930K (£420 on Novatech). I do a lot of video editing and gaming so which one to go for?. On the one hand, I'm thinking of going for the cheaper option (4790K is £250 and Asus Maximus Hero 7 is £150, so total is £400) as a stop gap until the new AMD K12 high performance cpu and AM4 mobos are released in March 2016. On the other hand, should I go for performance even though it is more expensive? (5930K is £420 and Asus X99 is £200, so total is £620).

But first of all I need to find out if AMD are going to release any new AM3+ motherboards in 2014 or 2015?. If so, I will stick with what I have and upgrade to a newer AM3+ mobo when it comes out. If not, then I may go for either the 4790K or 5930K. Please advise guys!.

17/09/14. QUICK UPDATE!. I just called AMD tech support on 01276932318. It is a UK number but I got through to a guy in the Phillipines!. Anyway, I asked the dude if AMD is planning to release any new AM3+ motherboards for 2014 and 2015?. He checked his catalogue/database and he said 'AMD currently does not have any plans to release any new AM3+ motherboards'. It makes sense because the last time I saw a new AM3+ motherboard, was in September 2012 when Asus released the new 'Crosshair V Formula Z'. I bought it straight away. But ever since then, I have not seen any more new AM3+ motherboards. So it seems the AM3+ motherboard is technically a defunct socket.

I doubt we will see much of anything, as AM3+ is technically a dead socket now. Keep in mind that DDR4 is still pretty expensive, and will be for awhile, making the X99 platform that much more expensive. I would just keep what you have, at least until Broadwell is out, and DDR4 prices have a chance to settle a bit.

Hey man, thanks for your reply. Yeah I read a month ago that AMD declared AM3 socket is discontinued (although a lot of folks confused it with AM3+). However, I am starting to wonder if the same is technically true of the AM3+ socket (as I have not seen any new AM3+ motherboards since I purchased my formula-Z 2 years ago). I'm going to look at comparison benchmarks and see if it is worth migrating to intel (at least until the new gen AMD cpu's come). Also, is DDR4 RAM just rebranded DDR3?. As far as my rig goes, it is pretty damn good -

DDR4 is lower voltage and higher speeds. Nothing new is coming out for AM3+, other than refreshes of current Vishera/Piledriver arch.

Hey man. Thanks for your help. I have added an update to my initial query, as I got word from the horse's mouth so to speak!. After much thought, I decided to migrate to intel in the interim. I have gone for the 4790K and Asus z97 workstation motherboard (awesome mobo, I love it). I am going sell my AMD rig (FX9590 and Formula Z) on ebay, because I can get good money for them right now and recoup c.60-65% of my outlay for my i7/1150 rig (cost me £496!).

I am very sad to see my AMD rig go, as I did not want to sell it willingly. But given the AMD roadmap, if I don't sell it now, I will end up losing a lot of money (I will get a pittance for it in March 2016). So for the next 18 months I am going to bide my time and use anti-consumer intel.

However, when AMD releases the new ARM-K12/X86 high performance Zen cpu and AM4 mobo (March 2016), you can bet my egg rolls I will be going back to AMD. The rumours are that AMD are going to merge the replacements for Opteron and AM3+ socket to provide a unified AM4 platform. The new gen Opteron cpu's will offer 12, 16 and 20 cores with built in ARM cortex processors!. The high performance X86 desktop flagship cpu will have 12 legitimate cores (not modules! as AMD are ditching module design). I really hope AMD partners come out with some amazing AM4 enthusiast gaming and workstation motherboards. If the price is right, I will get the 20 cores Opteron cpu and a high end AM4 workstation mobo.

Im just wondering, everyone is bitching that ddr4 is expensive.

2x4gb ddr3 is ~80-100$
2x4gb ddr4 is ~100-200$

cheapest 4x4gb is like 200$ which isnt that different from 4x4ddr3 kits...

20-50$ is expensive..?
its more like a 1 time buy.

Hi. I have just checked UK prices. The DDR4 RAM starts with 2133MHz (I thought that was DDR3!) and goes right up to 3000MHz. A 16GB (4x4GB) Crucial Ballistix 2400MHz kit costs £180 from Novatech. That is expensive, because in January 2104 I purchased two packs of TeamGroup Extreme DDR3 8GB (4x4GB) kit of 2400MHz RAM from Overclockers for £55 for each kit (total £110 for 16GB). The best deal I can find right now is from Overclockers for TeamGroup Extreme DDR3 2666MHz 8gb (2x4GB) kit for £60 (but all sold out now!). So it does seem there has been a huge price hike in DDR4 RAM (at least in the UK).

The overall platform cost can easily be more than that.

I compared the LGA 2011/v3 for this, since DDR4 is only used, currently, in LGA 2011 v3. Intel really isn't affected by ram speeds, much, at all. As I am a bit of a cheapskate, I wouldn't purchase either platform, personally. I would be happy with a Xeon 1231v3 and using the savings on better graphics and such.
