RAM Detection Problem

Hi everybody,

I just got the following system:

ASUS Rampage IV Black Edition
Intel Core i7-4960x 3.6 GHz LGA Boxed Processor
4 Crucial Ballistix Elite 16GB DDR3-1866 (2x8 GB)

My problem is with RAM detection. After setting everything up, I realized it only detects 48 GB of RAM out of 64. After trying different slots, I realized the problem comes from channel B. (I also tried different RAMs in Channel B, so it's not RAMs) So I concluded it was just dead slots, fair and simple. But I just looked at DIMM post in BIOS and it shows all 8 of them. In auto mode, they all operate at 1333 MHz, and when I look at latency timings, channel B had larger values (for RTL and IOC respectively) than others. I tried to make B's values smaller (so that they're all the same), did not help. Then I made other channels values go larger so that they match with B, did not help either. At last, I loaded XMP profile, latency timing values are not identical for each (but close, RTL is around 37-39, IOC is 5-7), still says it only has 48 gb. DRAM Voltage is set as 1.5 V, and VTT is 0.75 V. Has anyone encountered this issue before? Any ideas to solve it or should I just get a replacement?

Thanks for your help.

I have not installed the operating system yet. I see it on BIOS screen. Does choice of OS affect what you see on BIOS screen? (Sorry if it's a newbie question)

The motherboard supports up to 64 GB RAM, and it also supports the frequency.

I did. It detects 48 gb when I have RAMs in channels A, C, D only. I would assume channel B slot is dead, but it detects the RAM on channel B (on DIMM Post screen) when I put it back on channel B , so I'm not sure if there's a tweak I need to do or not.

Thanks for your reply. So is there a case where you see the RAM on DIMM post screen but the slot is still dead? That's what confuses me, and makes me think if I need to do a tweak in terms of voltage levels or anything else.

I m sorry, but I have no idea what you are saying, or why you are saying it. Whether or not Windows is installed has nothing to do with it.

You could try a very small voltage increase, but I don't think that is going help. Could be wrong, but it could surprise me.
