I've just done an out of case test with my newbuild (part list ) I first tested it with just the cpu, ram and gpu connected to the power. Then I pressed the start button on the mobo and all the fans started, the q-leds on the board whent from cpu to ram to vga like it should. But the boot device led didn't light up. the cpu fan then stopped spinning and immediately turned back on, with the led sequence starting again. I feared that the cpu was in danger so I turned the system off. I then connected power and a sata cable to the disk drive and tried again, this time it boots, the fans stay on and I can get into the bios. However, the Q-code is stuck on A2 which means "IDE detect" . I'm just wondering if I can proceed with the build or I need to fix something first?.
Thanks for the help!

Never, never, ever power on a CPU without having installed the CPU cooling. It's seconds before it will run into thermal throttling mode.

I believe newer CPUs will self-protect them by shutting down, but older ones used to fry faster than you could say "smoke signal".

Wow, I'm so sorry! I forgot to say I had installed the cpu heatsink and fan too *facepalm * when I said cpu fan, I meant the cooling!

I checked the manual and it shouldn't care which sata port is used. when I booted the system by pressing the start button on the mobo, it went through all the checks and stuck on A2 which meant "IDE detect" according to the manual. However, the video output was working and I could access the bios. I did this again to see if the same thing happened and it did, but this time it got stuck on AE (which means "Legacy Boot event") and immediately entered the bios.

The boot order in the bios is just the disk drive atm as I have not added my other drives.
