Hi All!

Long time lurker, first time poster here on Tom's. I just recently built my very first gaming rig sans graphics card; I've been patiently waiting for the GTX 900 series to hit the market before making a purchase.

Seeing as I'm new to the world of performance PC hardware, what is the typical delay time between the reveal date of a new generation of cards and the time when the first custom cards are commercially available?

I plan on purchasing an EVGA GTX 970. Nvidia will be announcing the 900 series on Sept 19th, so how long until EVGA might release their custom GTX 970 offering?

I know that information isn't readily available (as far as I know) but just asking for those of you who have following previous releases.

Thanks in advance for your answers. Cheers!

What are you looking for in a custom card?

Probably reference cards and a couple of fan type coolers will be available within a week or two.

Custom cards with liquid cooling or high overclocking capabilities might be a month or two.

My take is to prefer reference cards with blower type coolers anyway. They get heat out of the case directly. I would spend a bit more for factory overclocked versions.

The reference 900's will have the same coolers as the reference 700's had. But the 900's use less energy and run cooler, so the reference coolers will be sufficient.

Card makers have discovered that exotic coolers sell.
Regardless if they are necessary or not.
That is why we will see a bunch of them.

As far as the custom cards go, I am really leaning toward a reference card with the custom fan cooler (ACX from EVGA, unless they've developed a new cooling solution) as opposed to the blower.

I have a high airflow case and do not plan to run in SLI; I've read that the ACX/fan coolers perform better in these situations. The blowers are better for cramped and SLI configurations due to the lack of airflow.

There have already been listings and images for custom GTX 970s. Those should debut on the first day of release, September 19th.

i think that is the start of the Game24 event. 980/970 expected to be release at the end of that event.
