I've got these two cards in mind to choose between. Both are 2Gb GDDR5 and while the 7870 has more memory band width, it's only 6.25% better on the stats. I've only used Nvidia cards up to now, and I kinda feel 'the devil I know' makes me edge toward the GTX 660. However, I read that Crysis 3 was developed with AMD graphics in mind, so the HD7870 will show more than a 6.25% improvement in that specific game. Power consumption could be a factor too, with the HD7870 using up to 250watts! Whereas the GTX 660 uses 140watts. I've got an 800watt PSU so it's more the noise and heat I'm concerned about. So, what do you guys think? Has anyone used both of these cards?

I have the 660 and it's a good card for 1080p. gaming. But imo u should get the R9 270x at this point in time. No point in buying old tech. Or just get a 270 and OC it to be better than a 270x. Really I see no point in buying the 660 with the 270/270x on the market. And both those cards will do very good and are better then the 660.

So in conclusion. Neither. Get the 270/270x.

The Gtx 660 is a more powerful card overall. Between those 2, the 660 is the better choice. You can see the benchmarks below

Edit: If you can afford it, get a gtx 760 or a R9 280, they are a nice power boost over the 660

This is a Nvidia game , you can't really judge upon one game .

Full benchmarks :

BF4 :

The 270 Stock is ahead of the 660 here and same applies to 7870

Metro LL :

Same Case as BF4

Tomb Raider :

Yet again

Company of Heroes :

The 660 only pulls ahead in Crysis 3 on Very High settings detail however on High settings detail the 7870 defeats it

Not really sure why would anybody sacrifice frames in the favor of Ultra while he can play on High with amazing graphics and frames as well

COD Ghosts :

Conclusion time : Not really sure why would you go for the 660 if you want the best results get the 7870 as its very solid and can be crossfired afterwards down the road.

The 660 is solid but only pulls ahead in Bioshock infinite and Crysis 3 Ultra .

It's old benchmark. Just did test with one 7870, 40+ fps on high 2 msaa at 19x12 res.

Wooh, 250w?
It's around 130w
http://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/amd-radeon-hd-7850...

Measured power consumption R7870

System in IDLE = 157W
System Wattage with GPU in FULL Stress = 274W
Difference (GPU load) = 117W
Add average IDLE wattage ~10W
Subjective obtained GPU power consumption = ~ 127 Watts

Thanks stormworm, great info! I got the 250watt figure from the GPU Boss site. Not sure how you can be confident in power figures, as I'm now looking to get an R9 270X and have seen figures varying from 107W idling on W7 to 270W gaming Crysis 3 hi-res and max settings. Of course these figures are the 'system load', which includes the fans, Mobo and HDD's etc, so it's tricky knowing the precise power load of just the GPU. :)

Thanks nokiddingboss. It seems you're right. I've found an R9 270X for the same sorta money and it looks like the better card of the three. I would have picked your answer as the solution except technically TopLuca gave the best answer to my original question, but you get my heartfelt gratitude. :)

Thanks TopLuca. Excellent info! I'm picking your comprehensive answer as the solution to my original question. However, I've now found an R9 270X (thanks to nokiddingboss) for the same money and it's a superior card to both of my original choices, as your charts show, so I'm gonna get that. :)

Thanks Malli. You were the first off the block with what turns out to be the best suggestion for a superior card and I've found an R9 270X in the same money bracket! :)
