I have a 2009-era system with ASUS p7p55d motherboard (reference http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...) and intel i7 860 processor and windows 7 64bit OS

it presently has 2 sticks of this stuff:
G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL7D-4GBRH

I'm interested in upgrading/increasing my RAM to improve performance.

The RAM I currently have is no longer sold. I tried to use G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Desktop Memory Model F3-10666CL9S-4GBRL but it turned out incompatible

Where can I purchase RAM compatible for my current system? Direct links to online sellers that have the product in stock would be most appreciated.

The ram that you said you tried to use but is incompatible is the same as the ram that you are currently using. Could you clarify which ram doesn't work?

I guess you will have to be more specific. How much ram do you want, do you want to try to match what you have already?

Sorry, I corrected that.

I'd like 8 gigs of ram total. I'd like to match it if possible, yes. But if not, then... 8 gigs of compatible ram, any way I can get it. I have 4 ram slots on my mobo.

The ram that you mixed, the 2 + 2 kit and 4 gig kit both had different timings, this could be a reason why. I would suggest just getting an 8gb kit with 2 4gig sticks. Heres a kit that should work http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
There are good reviews for this from people with your mobo.

Thank you, I checked out the reviews and it does look like that should work. I ordered it with next day shipping, we'll see how it goes!

FYI on the prior RAM type I tried using, I did NOT mix it with the original RAM. Took the old RAM out. And I tried using the new stuff 1 stick at a time. None of it worked.
