I've been using the integrated intel HD 4600. Now will install an MSI GTX 760. Is this the correct procedure? Turn off pc --> insert new gpu -->boot to BIOS and change display adapter to external --> change DVI cable to GPU and restart ----> windows 8.1 will automatically find card and let me downlaod the latest drivers from MSI website

If this is correct, the. I don't need to do anything about the intel HD 4600 drivers still loitering in the background somewhere.

So should I even bother with the install CD? Also, why isn't it better to download drivers from MSI than from nVidia?

Because MSI don't update their version. It is an outdated version from when the card was released at the time.
Nvidia is the one who give the updates since it is their gpu chip. MSI just has their name and cooler on the card.

The reference design of the card is by nVidia who licenses 3rd parties to to sell under their own branding(MSI\EVGA\Gigabyte\HIIS\Asus etc....).
