I'm getting a 4690K and a 280X or 760 at Christmas or earlier and I was wondering which card would be better for playing games like watch_dogs and so on
760... Http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_i...
280X... http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_i...

what are the main difference in performance and what one will give me better FPS in games and which one has better overclocking performance

thanks

R9 280x is better, R9 280X is on par with the 770 which is a tier above the 760

R9 280X is more on the level of a GTX 770.
It is a higher end card than a GTX 760.
The R9 280X will give you good performance at 1080p ultra settings.

That's not even close. The 280x is by far better. The nVidia 760 more accurately competes with the Radeon 270x, but loses by just a bit overall.

To compete with the Radeon 280x, you'd need an nVidia 770, and then it's a toss up honestly. I'd by a 280x myself, but you really can't go wrong as long as you buy a good model of each(after market cooling, not just the reference design).

so is the 770 better than the 280X and would it be worth the extra money?

Interesting question, but premature.
Rumor has it that both amd and nvidia will have updated cards in that performance bracket by Xmas.
Look for a GTX970.

Overclocking either one will improve performance. Make sure you get a non-reference design for the Radeon though, because their reference designs are pretty much crap. The one I linked is pretty good, and there are other versions from Gigabyte, MSI, XFX, etc.

Any of those 4 would do, with my favorite being Gigabyte model with the 3 fans, and the cheapest price.

The 980 and 970 will be announced in 2 days and the 970 is rumored to have a $300 price tag for reference models. At the very least this will affect the prices of the cards you are looking at. The 960 will most likely be announced shortly after, sometime in October.

so I should wait for the new NVidia cards to come out?

Yeah at least to see their prices/performance and to see what they do to the prices of existing cards.
