Hey there guys,

I work as a 3d modeler/animator using Blender and it's Cycles rendering engine (see my site here www.twistedpancreas.com) and I'm not too up to speed on hardware but I do know I have to stick to a nVidia card/s which only work with the Cycles render.

So I've been told this might be a good match for what I'm after...

but thought I'd get second opinions...

look forward to your replies.

PS if anyone can recommend the best and cheapest place to buy all this in Australia, that would be appreciated.

Hi, I'm a novice Blender user, but I know a bit about hardware. The CPU, liquid cooler, RAM, Motherboard, case, and PSU are all pretty nice choices. That aside, it's a really bad time for GPU compute people to buy GTX 780s. The GTX 980 and 970 are apparently coming out next week, and their architecture is much more power efficient and faster for compute tasks. Wait until those drop, then check out coverage on Blender Artists, reviews, etc. In the end, you may be able to get away with a cheaper 970 and more performance.

It's a bit difficult to tell exactly how the cards will perform now. Since no publications (that I can find) benchmark Cycles, we have to wait for users to experiment for solid information. Here's a site that benched some GPU compute programs: http://www.sweclockers.com/recension/19332-nvidia-geforce-gtx-980-och-gtx-970/16#pagehead

Just from forum people using low-end maxwell cards (750 and 750 Ti - very confusing), 970 and 980 should be fantastic for blender, and incredibly power-efficient. And you're right, 6GB allows for bigger scenes, but the 9xxs would be much faster for the money. It also looks like you can't get 6GB 780s anymore, because the new cards are so much cheaper.

Really, it all comes down to money. The Maxwell cards are just way, way cheaper and power efficient.

Any recommendations on a monitor and wireless mouse I should also get with my new computer? I only need the one monitor since I already have one, and I had a good wireless mouse with work years ago which came with it's own charger which also held the mouse whilst it charged. Anything I should be checking out these days?

Thanks for all your input I appreciate it as well. I am in the same boat and trying to upgrade my 3 year old rig so that I can do VFX and editing quicker and have less down time.
