Wireless signal problem in house

I am having some problems with my wifi signal at my house. I moved back in May and at that time had an older Linksys 802.11G router. I had speed issues with it, so I went ahead and purchased an Asus RT-N66U router, plus a newer cable modem as well. My one wired connection works great and wireless in close proximity to the router is OK too.

The router is located upstairs and most of the time, we are trying to use wireless devices down. The performance (and signal strength as seen by stumbler programs) varies, but for the most part, I simply cannot get decent speed downstairs.

I have tried switching from 2.4 to 5 ghz and that helped a little, but in some areas, the signal is too weak to even pick up on 5. I have also tried using a wireless repeater downstairs, but clients connecting to it are even slower than the main network. This is not a huge house (2000 sqft) and my last house was larger and I did not have these issues.

I would appreciate any suggestions on what to try or troubleshooting steps to take.

Depending upon what is in the floors between the router and devices, there can be issues connecting. Is it possible to run an ethernet cable down to a 2nd router on the 1st floor (make it an access point and use another SSID)?

It may be possible to run an Ethernet cable, but would be a royal pain... the area upstairs is a finished room over garage and I don't think there's access from the attic to that room without cutting drywall. What about using a powerline adapter and 2nd router? If I did that, would it need to be an identical router to the main one or could I use a different one?

You can try the powerline adapter - I have had mixed results with them....but it is always an option. As for the 2nd router, it should be configured as an access point only - and can be virtually any brand router.
