Windows 8.1 upgrade issues

I upgraded to windows 8.1 from windows 7 a few days ago and have had nothing but issues. My pc usually freezes and I have to do a hard reset, then when windows starts up it'll just be a black screen. Then I have to reset it until the "automatic diagnostic repair" or whatever comes up instead of booting up. From here system restore does not work. I get an error and it tells me to turn off my nonexistant antivrus since I just installed windows... I've had to refresh windows multiple times and finally I gave up and decided to do a complete fresh install. Yet again my pc froze though. I have no idea why and even turn off automatic updating and manually deselecting hardware drivers doesn't work. My setup is an i5 3570k, Asus p8z77-v pro, Samsung 840 250gb SSD, WD black 1tb, Mushkin ddr3 1600 RAM.
Please help me find a fix... obviously I could just rollback to windows 7, but I purchased the upgrade and would like to make use of the advertised hardware optimizations.

Fixed the issue... found out if PC freezes, I can just reset it and enter the bios before windows starts. Then just discard changes and exit from the bios and windows starts up without the black screen.
