Which one has the better perfomance overall?
Gigabyte GTX 770

Or
XFX R9 290
http://au.pcpartpicker.com/part/xfx-video-card-r9290aed...

Which one will run most games max settings? Which is better? Please give reasons to your answer aswell. Thanks

I believe the R9 290 is slightly better but I also believe it outputs more heat. Both cards are fairly similar (and price wise also). Try checking out the Best Graphics Cards for the money report down to the bottom right, it's pretty useful.

The R9 290 is in the GTX 780 class for performance, making it the stronger of the 2 you mentioned. At the same price, it's kind of a no brainer to get the 290 instead of the 770.

The 770 competes with the R9 280X and are about equal in performance with the 280X winning performance/price.

Isn't that the R9 290x? I know there's a fairly large difference in performance between the two.

The 290X is supposed to be against the 780ti, but the 780ti has a fair lead over it. The 290 is competition for the 780, and the 290X is a bit above that.

Don't get either. 970 and 980 will be out next week or something like that and will bring down the prices of all current higher end GPUs.

As for performance, 770 is competing with 280X, 780 with 290 and 780Ti with 290X (but 290X is not worth the money as it is only a few percent faster than 290).

For the price, if you don't care about heat, power consumption and nvidia specific features, and do not want to wait for 970/980, get the 290.

The gigabyte 770 is the best 770 gpu and it takes lead over all 290 gpu. Though xfx 290 is good but this 770 is better. Nvidia gpu are expensive but they have lead over radeon gpu.
770 consumes 230 watt of power but 290 consumes 250 watt still 290 gives less clock speed than 770.
Both are 512 bit.
Plus 770 is shorter than 290 and benchmark of 770 is also better. 770 is less noisy than 290 and it can handle heavy video editing and games.

My suggestion go with 770 and you are getting it cheaper than 290.

Good luck.. :)

Nice fanboy speech, too bad the only thing correct in there is that the 290 uses more power than the 770. However, the 290 is more powerful so an increase in power consumption is somewhat expected. Considering the 290 trades blows with the 780.

That's the first I've heard of the 770 being better than a R9-290. The 290 competes with the 780, not the 770.

So now im leaning towards the R9 290, is this XFX any good?
Also the GTX 770 has a higher core clock with 1.14ghz while the R9 290 only has 947MHZ.
Both are good and the prices are pretty much the same, I'm not a super big gamer but I only want the best between the two. Thanks for all the answers guys

Higher clock speed doesn't necessarily mean higher performance.

Heres a video review of the xfx 290x. Its a good card but xfx is kind of like nvidia. I mean the voltage is usually locked down on xfx cards and most gigibyte cards ive owned. Thats really the only downside. Xfx has the best warranty on the AMD team and they got the looks.

Yeah there have been some cases of heat issues.
You can go with other brands if you worried that you might have them. I recommend to go with ASUS,Gigabyte or MSI. Sapphire is not bad too.

my xfx 7950 had very bad temps, the cooler on the R9-290 is not much better. where-as the tri-x cooler is among the best, very quiet and has no problem cooling the GPU at 1000MHz.

Does a heat issue even matter with a lifetime warranty? Also, my brothers xfx 280x runs in the 60s max. thats 10c cooler then my gigibyte 280x and reviews show it running much cooler then the stock cooler so its still nice. prices may drop in the next few weeks too with the launch of nvidias new cards.

Yes it heat does matter, because why should you have to deal with heat then have it burn up, then RMA it(you pay shipping). When you could get a card without heat issues and not deal with that whole mess :p

if performance throttling, no o/c headroom and sending your card away to be replaced for a month is not an issue, then getting too hot it not an issue.

For a similar price, you can get a card with a decent cooler.
