thinking of buying the TF-SF1008D 8 Port 10/100Mbps Desktop Switch

But what does unmanaged mean? is it plug and play when i just plug into the ports into to pc/laptops and i can play immediately?

For lan parties?

Managed switches allow you to segment the ports and setup VLans. You don't need them for home use.

Now that switch looks really old in that it is a 10/100. You couldn't find a 1000 base T for the money your spending?

If you are using a switch without a router, you need to seup the IP addresses on the computers manually to have them see eachother on the nework.

As above, get a 1 gig switch, silly to get a 100mb switch these days.

I really hve no knowledge on these switches. I plan to just play on lan, what difference does 1gig or 100mb make? also price wise? Brand new 10/100 here where im from is 10$ that exact model. Suggest a 1gig one?

It depends on how tight the money is. A 8 port gig switch will cost between $30-$40 most places.

Performance wise it is a lot faster. The question would be does it matter. Depending on the game..but most use very little traffic when you are actually playing. The part that need bandwidth is on games that are dependent on a central server and dynamically load parts of the game. If too many users are trying at the same time it could exceed the 100m just for tiny amounts of time but it would cause lag in the game.

It really depends on the game some that have the complete game preloaded needed extremely low bandwidth. When you look at other uses like file backup or file sharing a gig switch is going to be a lot faster.

Pretty much this is going to come down to how much a better switch costs in relationship to your income.
