unknowingly, i copied files from my old Dell to my Western Digital hard drive....and now i can't access the files from the hard drive. i believe the software, which is a pain in the rear, is the cause for this. is it possible to format this, run it as a 'dumb' drive, and copy the files from my old pc and sync them to my new one all over again?

Hi there ashleighkaye,

I am really sorry that your WD My Passport is causing you frustration. Did you copy these files with the software program WD SmartWare? You can't find the files or the access is denied in some way?
I would suggest you that if you don't feel comfortable with using the WD back up software, you can just format the drive, don't install WD SmartWare and drag and drop your files.

Here is a quick guide of how to format a HDD in case you need it: http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/3865

Hope this will help,
